| Description |
This Palm is a true dwarf, being the smallest in the Trachycarpus genus. Being very short trunked species, it rarely develops a trunk more 1' High and is extremely cold hardy. There has been reports of survivability at -2 degrees. Mature plants in the wild are reported to grow 4-5' High. The Yunnan Dwarf Palm is from the Yunnan Province in Western China in an area of heavy free range goat farming. Because of it low growing habit this species flower spikes are eaten goats before they set fruit. This makes securing seed difficult at best. Now on the threatened species list, the Yunnan Dwarf Palm hopefully will get established in the states and other parts of the world where it can flower and produce fruit freely and in the coming years provide a reliable seed source to protect this highly sought, cool, and rare palm.
