Botanical Name Quercus michauxii
Description Q. michauxii is a White Oak member that is fast growing with deep red foliage in the fall. Swamp Chestnut Oak was once planted as a landscape tree around old home places in the south because hurricanes and high winds seldom could topple it as the wood is very dense and strong and is still used to make white oak baskets. This oak produces a large acorn that is very low in tannin making it a attractive to deer and bears in the fall.
