Description |
Amsonia is a wonderful genus to garden with. It produces terminal clusters of blue star shaped flowers that emit a very fragrant perfume fragrance in spring. The big difference in species is mostly foliage shape. An early blooming, long lived, carefree perennial, the species pictured tabernaemontana flowers emerge just as the foliage matures. It attracts the first butterflies of the season and is a favorite source of nectar of the Zebra Swallowtail. It develops a 3'High x 4Wide shrub like form for summer and brilliant yellow foliage for fall. The Genus will provide years of enjoyment. The true species is rarely offered. I have seen many plants labeled as species tabernaemontana incorrectly.
