Description
An evergreen tree that can reach a height of 40'High x 25'Wide at maturity. It has bright green evergreen aromatic leaves 3-4" long. Early settlers used its aromatic leaves as a substitute for the Mediterranean bay leaf (Laurus nobilis) in which it is related the same as species. Like Species P. borbonia it is still used in cooking by many coastal residents for flavoring stews and spaghetti sauce. Swamp redbay (Persea palustris) differs from the (Persea borbonia) redbay in that Persea palustris leaf undersides; petioles and twigs do not have the brownish hairs like P.borbonia does. It prefers rich moist. sites.
