Description |
Thelypteris kunthii is one of our finest, finely textured native ferns. In rich shady conditions this deciduous fern can reach a height of 4' by mid summer and in time will colonize to create a thick mat of the feathery feminine looking fern fronds. Native to the coastal region of the southeastern US, West Indies, and Central America where it enjoys warmer weather. It can be grown with ease in colder climates such as zones 5-7 if you are not in an area of the country where the soil freezes for long periods of time. This Coastal plain species cast a pleasing golden yellow color as the fronds die for the year and is one of the last to lose color of all native ferns that deciduous. This is one of the easiest native ferns to grow in the landscape. An application of lime every 6 months will benefit this species if you garden in acidic soils.
