Description |
A recent introduction selection 'Major Wheeler' is an extra long flowering form producing a bumper crop of flowers in early spring and continuing sporadically to flower even as late as Christmas. Reported to be the best rich red form in the trade based on pictures and description. We have yet to see it flower to confirm the exact hue, though we all are busting with excitement to see the first flowering, so the jury is still out until next spring. Originally found along the North Carolina coastal region and sure to be the star of red flowers in your garden which makes this species a hummingbird magnet. We can all thank Mr. Charles Wheeler, past president of the North Carolina Botanical Garden Foundation for noticing this form and bringing it into cultivation.
